Clean water is non-negotiable in any emergency. When municipal systems fail or you are forced to move, these five methods cover most real-world scenarios.

1. Boiling

Bringing water to a rolling boil for one minute (three minutes above 2,000 m / 6,500 ft) kills most pathogens. It does not remove chemicals or heavy metals.

2. Filtration

Pump filters and gravity systems with a 0.2 micron (or smaller) rating remove bacteria and protozoa. Pair with activated carbon if chemical taste is a concern.

3. Chemical disinfection

Chlorine dioxide tablets and liquid bleach (unscented, properly dosed) are lightweight backups. Follow product instructions exactly — concentration matters.

4. UV devices

Battery or crank-powered UV pens work well in clear water. They are less reliable in cloudy water; pre-filter when possible.

5. Solar disinfection (SODIS)

In a pinch, clear PET bottles in strong sun for six hours can reduce bioburden. Not ideal as your only plan, but worth knowing.
